The Problem

Throughout the course of an average day, a primary care physician will have many face-to-face appointments with patients. This requires them to get up to speed on the patients story quickly, often while they’re in the exam room. We wanted to explore how we might help primary care physicians get quickly up to speed with the patients background, without detracting from the face-to-face experience.

Research

The team interviewed and visited more than 10 physicians. We then turned these learnings into insights through mapping out the user journey, as well as conducting early concept validation tests.

After validating that we were solving the right problem, we went through a rapid prototyping process to quickly iterate through solutions, resonance test them with users, and socialize with product and engineering counterparts.

Concept Exploration

2.png

Through the research conducted, we identified opportunities to expand and improve athenaHealth’s existing mobile experience. Working closely with User Research and Product Management, I began exploring mobile solutions that would help solve the users current problems. I created sketches and low fidelity mock ups, which I tested with our users to understand if the concept resonated with them, and why or why not. This feedback was then collected and synthesized, and we moved into refining the concept and developing higher fidelity prototypes.

Through the iterative process, we identified future concepts that could solve similar problems. One of these is the "timeline" - the ability to view, search, and filter patient information in a chronological format.

Rapid Prototyping

Throughout this process, I used rapid prototyping to quickly iterate on ideas and gather user feedback. This process consisted of designing clickable high fidelity prototypes, I then used both moderated and unmoderated concept tests to share these ideas with users, and as I gathered feedback and learned about user needs, I was able to continue iterating through potential solutions.

Impact

The product was first launched as a beta to a small user group. Using a lightweight survey we asked our users to rate how valuable they found the product out of 1 - 5 (5 being the most valuable). The average score was 4.2 with the majority of users finding the product valuable.

The product is currently available to athenaHealth customers via the Apple App Store, and has 4 out of 5 stars.

“User driven innovation! My colleagues at Baystate love this app. Hands down the fastest way to get into a record.”
